I like to read
Black history book
I like to read
Black history book
That kind that doesn’t teach in school
The kind that makes white folks uncomfortable
That kind of book which is banned from the
Public eye….
I read as much as I can…
It took time and patience
Under the critical facts….
History should be
My favorite genre
Cos I’m deeply learnin about
My people and the system…..
It helps build
My poems to explain
The mirror of
The world’s reality….
I wanna remember
Things
Even when they bring anger
Out of me….
When you read a page
A chapter
And you begin to think
Exercisin your brain
Developin questions
And thoughts
Observin ass backwardness
Of a white man’s ways to
Harm us….
You could see perspectives
You could see a bigger picture…
I like to read
Black history book
Cos I get to learn
A countless reasons
Why the envy
Why so much hate
On the melanin..
Like I’m givin myself
Lessons about the past
About our ancestors…
I was curious
I wanted to know
I wanted to study
And pass on the message….
There’s no indoctrination
Around my space
I have the truth to sleep over
And let my soul writes
Durin the sunrise….
I wanna challenge
Black people
To read one history book
About ourselves
Read one page
Or two…. I want them
To use their critical thinkin
Let those factual analysis
Digest their system
For a bit….
Cos honestly
It’s another way of
Healin our scars
Another way of learnin
How to love ourselves
And our people….
And they don’t have to do
The challenge
It was an idea instead
Of twerkin
And being comedian…
I thought
For us to do
Somethin
Constructive….
Some still think
It’s a nerd thing
Some still think
We’re talkin white
Cos we’re readin a book
Yet in that frame of mindset
Black people still think
White folks are more intelligent
Than us…..
When we’re extra wiser….
We’re wise
We’re brilliant
We don’t have low
IQ….
and we can read
And write….
I like to read black history book
Cos I saw me in my ancestors’ shoes….
I feel all the feelings in their souls
I witness bones of survival and endurance….
I watched slave rebellions in my head….
I look at indigenous black people
They were here first…
They were the parents of all civilizations….
I challenge you
To pick up one book
One memory book of
Our humanity that started in
Motherland….
Mama continent…
Maybe you might like it, too
You might enjoy learnin
About our beautiful people
And how the sun loves us
Unconditionally….✊🏿💯©️ Kai C. 6-15-26
