If you’re a black poet,
And your poems are about
Racism, advocatin for black people
Keep that motherfuckin pen in that
Hand!!!!
Do you understand me?
Do you understand?
Keep it in your hand….
Keep them comin…
Keep your voice on the mic…
I don’t give a damn
Whose feelings are hurt….
Don’t stop…..
Let the world be mad…
If you lose friends, then lose friends…
They have no respect for the truth anyway….
Be a black poet…
A great one….
Be the blackest….
I don’t understand people
Say you’re too black
Honey
We live in a racist society…..
You forgot?
Why do we feel the need to
Tone it down?
Cos of white people….
White people get whiter
In our surroundings
And we don’t say a word….
Cos in our minds
We let white folks be…
In our slave mentals
We don’t tell white people
What to do…
They’re supreme….
And I’m tellin you
Black poet
You write
You speak
You dictate your blackness
However the fuck you want it to be…
Don’t let anyone tell you
To quiet your words
Or be careful with your words
You spill the truth
From your soul
Onto that page…
Don’t be scared
Don’t apologize
Let everyone throw tantrums….
Bravery has open doors
For encouragement
To inspire others
A message needs to cross that line
In order to bring anger and activism
Out of your readers’ bones…
There’s no dancin
There’s no singin
There’s somethin to think about….
If you’re a black poet
Who took risks on
Writin black poetry books
On black issues and unity
With common sense…
Not the destruction kind
But black people gettin together
As one…respectin one each other
How those melaninated metaphors
Spread like wildfire
And every black household catches it….
Almost every black family is healin from
Ancient trauma that happened on plantations
Imagine a book of world record
Publishin our culture poetically
Then you might become a threat
Cos you love your black people…
It might stop the literary crisis….
It will have everybody readin and use a critical thinking skills
Oh you could be a threat…
FBI
CIA
Other white supremacy agencies….
Who knows….
If you’re a black poet,
And you choose to write
Just for people who look like you…
You can do that…..
You can write how the white boys chokehold
Black men out of jealousy….
You can write how black women are not protected at all…
You can write about how black people need to stand on business
And create boundaries for us only….
If you’re a black poet,
And you ain’t sorry…
You never need to…
I’m proud of you….
I’m proud of who you become….
And the fact you gave a voice for
Black people who are afraid to speak up…
Some can’t….
That’s the thing about being a black poet
A black poet knows so much
You want give them a medicine
You want to inspire….
I thank you for that…
Always….
