I don't celebrate this black holiday…

I learned it way before the government's

Recognition, before it was commercialized…

And now it has become performative…

I don't understand why… 

I know the history, 

But why does it have to turn into corporations? 

Why does it need to be a part of 

Capitalism?

Somebody let white supremacy took over

And put colonized bull shit into it…

It's why I don't wanna participate 

In the cookout….Just like I don't wanna 

Be in the Kwanzaa either…

It's all performin 

It's all fake

The fact is that black people asked a white man To celebrate our black owned holiday..

Did we demand him to recognize june 19th?

Cos after all, we're still in slavery…

We're not in white folks’ household 

Not on plantations…

I understand 

Why we celebrate 

Me, I don't wave flags 

I don't think we are liberated…

Majority of brothas and sistahs still have chains of whiteness…

Yes slaves fought back 

Yes Abraham so called freed blacks…

However it was a transaction…

Technically if you really think about it,  

It wasn't a freedom song…

The only liberation I know 

That black people had to free themselves…

And still America dehumanize us…

To some black people who planned 

Family gatherings and tell stories 

Of back in the day…

With food and laughter 

And it wasn't a performance then..

They never had to ask a white man 

To have this day as a blessin..

Til someone thought it was a good idea 

To turn into a holiday…
