Tonea Nicole Miller (Nikki)
This is why i feel like
Ida B. Wells
This is why my soul
Vibin Billie holiday
When it comes to
Black people
Swingin from a tree…
They don’t hang themselves
They don’t have a ladder
No chair
We never take ropes
With us….
I heard a black woman
Got lynched in
Miami….she was goin to
Juneteenth celebration
And of course
It wasn’t mainstream…
It was local…
Black Floridians
Shook their heads
Mad as fuck
But this is the south
They have known this…
Things didn’t change
Racists
Did that on the down low
And somebody recently told
Me that i should change the subject
Another reason why
I never stop writin
This cos my people are being
Harmed by racial violence
They’re tryin to get me to
Ignore that but I wanna
Write about it cos
There’s always goin to be a
Warnin, there’s always goin to
Be a tragedy especially when it’s not
Broadcast on the national news….
We heard it on social platforms
News clips and no this isn’t AI….
her name is
Tonea Nicole Miller
She didn’t carry a ladder
Not a chair
Not a fuckin rope….
Cops are lyin
Cops covered up
And her family is cryin
Up a storm….
Strange fruit
Never leave bare…
It stays
And black poets like myself
Will always write poems
About the bloody hands of
America
Not to benefit black pain
In a bad way….
But to have black people To
Understand…
And to encourage them to fight
Back
Cos this is violence…
Raw violence
It’s not a forgivable mistake….
White folks
Especially in the down south
They wanted to kill you….
They wanted to feel like Jim Crow all over again…
You can’t say
Skin color doesn’t matter
When we got a target on our black spines…
Every time unexpectedly
Expectedly
This is America
And being black in America
Is where we as black people
Are mindin our business
Somehow not on racism’s watch….
We do and try live our best lives
As much as we can
Til atrocities come to visit again…
I don’t wanna sound negative
And sad
But this is realistic….
Tonea didn’t have to die
She doesn’t deserve to pass away…
I blame the system…
And we’re the victims of it…
And lynchings
Are still a major role
We don’t see it…
Again
It’s a secret…
However we know….
I give her family and her friends
A lot of sympathy…
My condolences go out to them
Nobody deserves to lose a loved one
At all….
