african american poetry

we speak in
our language
of our lives
on paper
we create the spoken word
preaching us
our thoughts our emotions
we carry our spirits like history
lingers us
to our generation
we sail in
our blood our heritage
black skin
brown complexion
of a negro poet........

Takes me back years, to a record of an American group called The Last Poets. I can still remember one beginning with 'When the revolution comes....' :)
